Getting Started with Rust on Witchly.host
Rust is one of the most popular and demanding survival games available. With its harsh open-world environment, base building, PvP combat, and deep progression systems, running a Rust server requires reliable, high-performance hosting. Witchly.host provides optimized Rust server hosting with the resources needed to deliver a smooth experience for your community.
Understanding Rust Server Requirements
Rust is exceptionally resource-intensive compared to other game servers. The game’s complex world simulation, entity tracking, and player interactions demand significant RAM and CPU power. This is why our Rust plans start at 10 GB RAM — anything less would result in poor performance.
Choosing the Right Plan
Witchly.host offers two Rust hosting plans:
- The Radtown (10 GB RAM, $15/mo) — Suitable for smaller communities and moderate world sizes. Handles 10-30 players comfortably depending on world size and plugin count.
- The Launch Site (16 GB RAM, $25/mo) — Our best seller. Built for larger communities, bigger map sizes, and heavier plugin loads. Supports 30+ players with proper configuration and optimization.

Deploying Your Server
Setting up your Rust server on Witchly.host takes just a few minutes:
- Log in to your dashboard at Dashboard
- Click Create Server and select Rust as your game
- Choose your plan (The Radtown or The Launch Site)
- Enter a name for your server
- Select your preferred server location
- Complete your order and wait for provisioning
Once provisioned, your server will appear in your dashboard ready for configuration.
First-Time Setup
After deployment, configure your server before opening it to players:
- Navigate to your server in the dashboard
- Go to the Startup tab to configure essential startup variables:
- Server Name — The name that appears in the server browser
- Server Description — A short description of your server
- World Size — Map size in meters (default 3000, range 1000-6000)
- World Seed — Determines map layout (leave blank for random)
- Max Players — Maximum concurrent players
- Click Start to boot your server for the first time
The first startup takes several minutes as the server generates the world map. Monitor the Console tab for progress. When you see Server startup complete, the server is ready for connections.
Finding Your Connection Details
Your server address and port are displayed on the main overview page in your dashboard. You will need these to connect.
The connection address format is: IP:Port (e.g., 123.456.789.0:28015)
Connecting to Your Server
There are two ways to connect to your Rust server:
Method 1: F1 Console (Recommended)
- Launch Rust
- Press F1 to open the console
- Type:
client.connect IP:Port(replace with your actual server address) - Press Enter to connect
Method 2: Server Browser
- Launch Rust
- Click Play Game
- Select the Community or Modded tab (depending on whether you have plugins installed)
- Use the search bar to find your server by name
- Click on your server and press Join
The F1 console method is more reliable as the server browser can sometimes be slow to update or miss servers.
Essential First Steps After Connecting
Once connected to your server as the owner:
- Grant yourself admin access — In the dashboard console, type:
ownerid <your-steam-id> "YourName" "Owner"thenserver.writecfg - Set up basic rules — Configure PvP, decay, and other settings (see our Server Configuration guide)
- Install essential plugins — Most Rust servers benefit from plugins like Gather Manager and teleportation (see our Plugins guide)
- Test the server — Walk around, test building, check performance
Finding Your Steam ID
You need your Steam ID (SteamID64) to grant admin access:
- Go to steamid.io
- Enter your Steam profile URL
- Copy your SteamID64 — it is a 17-digit number starting with
7656
Server Visibility
Rust servers can appear in different browser tabs:
- Community — Servers without Oxide/uMod plugins installed
- Modded — Servers with Oxide/uMod plugins installed
- Both tabs require your server to be properly configured and online
If your server does not appear in the browser, players can always connect directly using the F1 console method.
Managing Your Server
The Witchly.host dashboard provides full server management:
- Console — Execute RCON commands and monitor server output in real time
- Files — Browse and edit server files directly from your browser
- Startup — Adjust startup parameters (world size, seed, player count, etc.)
- Settings — Reinstall, rename, or manage your server
- SFTP — Connect via SFTP on port 2022 for bulk file transfers (see our SFTP guide)
Understanding Rust Wipes
Rust servers operate on a wipe cycle. The first Thursday of every month is a forced wipe where Facepunch (Rust’s developer) releases an update that requires a map wipe. Many servers also perform custom wipe schedules (weekly, biweekly, etc.). For full details, see our Wipe Guide.
Troubleshooting
Server won’t start:
- Check the console for error messages
- Verify your startup parameters are valid (world size within range, valid seed format)
- Try reinstalling the server from the Settings tab
Players can’t connect:
- Confirm the server is fully started (look for
Server startup completein console) - Verify players are using the correct IP and port
- If using the server browser, the server may take a few minutes to appear after starting
- Try the F1 console connect method as a fallback
Server is laggy:
- Reduce world size if it is set above 4000
- Lower the max player count
- Check for resource-heavy plugins
- See our Performance and Optimization guide
High RAM usage:
- Rust servers naturally use a lot of RAM — this is expected behavior
- Large world sizes and many entities consume more memory
- Consider upgrading to The Launch Site plan if you are on The Radtown
Next Steps
